Residential Travel Plans
A Residential Travel Plan is a package of measures used at new housing and mixed use developments. Normally, Residential Travel Plans are accompanied by Personal Travel Plans.
Residential Travel Plans aim to reduce car use by:
- Supporting sustainable forms of transport
- Reducing the need to travel.
Residential Travel Plans:
- Are an important tool to deliver accessible, sustainable communities involving meeting the access needs of residents, and increasing travel choice
- Focus on the origins of journeys from people's homes
- Find new ways of addressing residents' travel needs and demonstrate how to influence travel choices
- Require partnerships between developers, local authorities, local communities and new residents, and offer benefits to all partners
- Ensure new developments perform better in terms of walking, cycling and public transport access
- Help to overcome concerns about increased traffic and parking problems which may arise from the new development
- Contribute to a suite of tools promoted under the general heading in the UK of 'Smarter Choices'.
Residential Travel Plans are at the heart of building and maintaining new housing developments:
- Location: Houses within easy reach of shops and services, walking and cycling become the natural choice
- Built Environment: A compact layout is more walking and cycling friendly
- Services and Facilities: Good public transport, a car club and other measures reduce the need for multiple car ownership
- Travel Plan Coordinator: Works with residents and developers to ensure the Travel Plan meets access needs and evolves over time
- Promotional Strategy: Welcome packs, public transport and cycling discounts and car club membership help introduce the Travel Plan and build enthusiasm.
